I often get asked how I started Cariboo. I was told for many years I could not have children - nevertheless, after 5 years of trying I was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Amanda, born in 1985 and later, a handsome son, Brendan, in 1989. As I shopped for nursery products I was shocked to find so many were poorly made, out of materials that are not environmentally friendly. I was particularly upset to see cribs made from metal and plastic.
New Zealand has an abundance of natural, sustainable raw materials and yet nobody was using them. Of necessity, I designed my first crib in 1985 - the Gentle Motions. Friends, family and associates loved it and clamoured to have one. Demand grew to the stage where I decided to sell my insurance brokerage business and develop Cariboo into a worldleading nursery supply company using all the natural sustainable products I could find. We work from converted farm barns underneath the beautiful Southern Alps. Cariboo employees are mostly my family and friends and we share together the excitement of being involved in the development of Cariboo products. Cariboo care tips
- Always sleep your newborn on its back as recommended by health agencies
- Always use a new mattress for every new baby
- Do not leave any toys in any sleeping areas for babies or toddlers
- Do not overheat your children - maintain an even temperature in the baby's room
- Do not use bumpers or any loose bedding in the child's sleeping bed
- Check your child's room for hazards. Always ensure there are no hanging cords or other dangers
- Air your mattress each day
- Never sleep with your baby in your bed
- Do not smoke, drink alcohol or take any illicit drugs during your pregnancy
- Never leave your child unattended on a changer table
